Can the Blackmagic Micro Converter BiDirect 3G do 4K or UHD?

No. This is the 3G-SDI model — it caps at 1080p60 / 1080p59.94 / 1080p50 (HD only). 4K/UHD signals will not pass. If you are shooting UHD and need SDI↔HDMI, step up to the Micro Converter BiDirect 12G (with PSU), which runs 12G-SDI and handles 2160p60. Most BD buyers on BMPCC 4K/6K using ProRes HD can stay on the 3G; URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 and UHD-plant workflows need the 12G.

Does it really auto-detect conversion direction?

Yes — there are no DIP switches, no mode buttons. Feed an active SDI signal into the SDI port and the HDMI port becomes the output. Feed HDMI in, and SDI becomes the output. The unit handles both 2-channel embedded SDI audio and 2-channel HDMI audio automatically. If you need deliberate one-way behaviour (to block unintentional back-feed), use the uni-directional HDMI to SDI 3G (with Power Supply) sibling instead.

What's the difference between the PSU SKU and the USB-C-only SKU?

Both units are electrically identical — same HDMI 1.4b and 3G-SDI ports, same re-clocked SDI loop. The only difference is that this SKU ships with the bundled 5V universal power supply (US/UK/EU/AU plug adapters). The non-PSU SKU costs slightly less but assumes you already own a 5V USB-C wall charger or will power from a laptop USB-C port. For field kits and rental rigs, the PSU-included SKU is the safer pick.

Will it work with the ATEM Mini Pro for live streaming?

Yes — this is one of the most common use cases. The ATEM Mini Pro Switcher accepts HDMI only, so pairing the BiDirect 3G lets you bring broadcast 3G-SDI cameras (BMPCC, PXW, FS5) into the ATEM programme via HDMI. Use a short BNC-to-BNC cable from camera to the Micro Converter, then a 1-metre HDMI jumper from the converter to the ATEM input.

Does it support BMPCC camera control or tally over SDI?

The Micro Converter BiDirect 3G passes the 3G-SDI signal and its embedded audio/timecode, but it does not decode or re-inject camera-control or tally data. For tally/camera-control routing on a BMPCC, use a full ATEM switcher workflow — the 3G-SDI signal from the BiDirect goes into the ATEM, and the ATEM handles tally back to the camera over its own SDI return.

Can I power it from a laptop USB-C port instead of the included PSU?

Yes. The USB-C jack accepts 4.4V–5.25V DC, which covers a standard laptop or power-bank USB-C output. The bundled 5V PSU is the recommended option for studio installs where a dedicated wall supply is cleaner; the laptop / power-bank option is ideal for ENG field kits and car-bound live streams.
