Matching a tripod to your camera

Payload is the first number. Add the camera body, lens, monitor, microphone, battery and any cage, then choose a system rated above that total. A head run at its limit will not damp smoothly.

Counterbalance holds the camera steady when you let go at an angle. Fixed counterbalance is fine for a consistent rig; variable earns its cost if your setup changes.

Bowl or flat base. A 65mm or 75mm bowl lets you level the head quickly on uneven ground without adjusting each leg — worth having for location work.
